1) use strong passwords on all accounts on your pc, including greater than 8 characters, letters and numbers, upper and lower case.

2) use this free antivirus software for windows and update often, free and I prefer it over McAffree and Norton. Visit this link for other operating systems and more info.

3) disable windows updates, and the remote access manager

4) use the Help>system restore>restore my computer to an earlier time if your pc just started 'acting up' but ran fine a week or month ago.

5) use the antivirus above, avoid installing any additional toolbars, popup blockers, spy ware scanners

6) scan downloaded files before using

7) keep your pc clean literally-- unplug the system remove the side and vacuum near fans inside and out!

8)  backup/copy/save important data on a jump drive, cd writer, external hard drive or 2nd hard disk.

9) new pc's can be had for $350-$540 with monitor, it's generally not a good idea to spend over $100 fixing your old system

10) if you don't mind losing your data, sometimes your pc can be restored at boot-- watch for a <F10> or <F12> to restore option
